How do you evaluate the current state of the energy sector in Türkiye and globally?
Today, the energy sector is experiencing one of the most comprehensive transformations in its history. For many years, energy was primarily defined through the lens of generation, transmission, and consumption. Today, however, it must be viewed from a much broader perspective. Energy has evolved into a multi-layered ecosystem positioned at the intersection of data management, carbon policies, financial sustainability, technology, and geopolitical dynamics. Globally, electricity demand continues to grow at a strong pace. Data centers, artificial intelligence applications, electric vehicles, and new consumption patterns driven by digitalization are pushing energy demand well above historical averages. At the same time, the energy transition is not progressing at the same pace across all regions of the world. While some countries prioritize reducing carbon emissions, others continue to focus on ensuring energy access and supply security. Therefore, rather than adopting a one-size-fits-all approach, we believe each country should develop transition strategies tailored to its own circumstances. From Türkiye's perspective, it is highly encouraging that the majority of newly installed generation capacity in recent years has come from renewable energy sources. However, the expansion of renewable energy also creates new requirements. Energy storage systems, smart grids, and greater system flexibility must now be developed at an equally rapid pace. As demand continues to grow, baseload power plants remain essential in meeting both regional and global energy needs. At ODAŞ, we view the energy transition as an exercise in balancing multiple priorities. We believe that energy security, operational efficiency, and sustainable transformation are complementary rather than competing objectives. Accordingly, we focus on maintaining a balanced energy portfolio across both our domestic and international investments. We also believe that the energy transition extends well beyond electricity generation. It encompasses a broad value chain ranging from critical minerals to digital infrastructure. Consequently, energy security is increasingly defined not only by energy resources but also by strategic minerals and technology infrastructure.
What opportunities does digitalization create in the energy sector?
Digitalization is creating new opportunities across the energy sector, from investment decision-making to operational management. At ODAŞ, we see energy generation as more than simply producing electricity; we consider it an investment model supported by data and technology. For us, digitalization is not merely a technological transformation but also a strategic enabler that strengthens the investment ecosystem. We therefore believe that data-driven approaches and technology-enabled investment models will play a defining role in shaping the future of the energy sector.
What initiatives are you implementing to reduce carbon emissions?
At ODAŞ, we place sustainability at the core of our corporate strategy. We pursue this approach systematically under three key pillars: Responsible Growth, Continuous Improvement, and Growing Stronger Together. Published in 2025, our first Sustainability Report represents not only a reporting milestone but also a strategic document reflecting our institutional capabilities, long-term objectives, and commitment to sustainability. As outlined in the report, we have implemented investments in areas such as waste management infrastructure and environmental compliance projects. At our Çan2 Thermal Power Plant, we support the principles of the circular economy by repurposing by-products such as fly ash and gypsum for use in the cement and construction industries. In doing so, we transform waste from a disposal challenge into a source of economic value.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
The future of the energy sector will not be determined solely by generation capacity. Success in the years ahead will belong to companies capable of managing energy, technology, data, and sustainability in an integrated manner. At ODAŞ, we have made significant investments across the energy, mining, and tourism sectors. As of 2024, our international investments accounted for 34% of our total installed generation capacity. This milestone represents a significant step forward in the execution of our international growth strategy and reflects our commitment to building a diversified and sustainable investment portfolio.
