ODAŞ, which has been attracting attention with its investments in the energy and mining sectors since 2010, continues to grow with strategic investments. Ahmet Can, ODAŞ Chief Electricity Production Officer, said: 'As ODAŞ, we are a company that operates in the energy and mining sectors with a sense of responsibility towards society and the environment on a global scale. Within the first five years of our establishment, we were listed in the BIST-100 Index. Today, we have achieved the success of being included in the BIST-30 Index. In the energy sector, we produce with domestic coal in our 330 MWe Çan2 Thermal Power Plant, which was completed in a short period of three years, and we can convert domestic lignite directly into electricity. Çan2 Thermal Power Plant is one of the few privately owned power plants in Turkiye with this capability and the environmental permit and licence certificate. In addition, with our expertise and strong capital structure in the energy sector, we made our first international investment with a natural gas combined cycle power plant in Uzbekistan. In the mining sector, we have reserves of antimony, gold, silver, nickel and coal.
Can stated that they will continue to be one of the innovative players in the sector with the importance they attach to technology and human resources, while maintaining their existing investments in energy and mining. Can said, "We are working with the aim of adding value to both Turkiye and the regions where our investments in the energy and mining sectors are located. We aim to increase our productivity in our existing investments in both sectors and to grow in new markets with strategic products. We will continue to invest with our policy based on sustainable growth.
Çan2 Thermal Power Plant is a first in many respects
Noting that Çan2 Thermal Power Plant is a first in many respects, Can said, "The flue gas treatment system of our Çan2 Thermal Power Plant has the latest technological equipment with an efficiency of 99.3 per cent and is one of the first coal-fired power plants with a zero-waste certificate. Our Çan2 Thermal Power Plant, which doesn’t have a bypass function in the flue gas treatment system in order to be environmentally friendly, also stands out among conventional power plants as a facility that adopts environmentally friendly practices. At the same time, the relocation of Çan2 Thermal Power Plant from Austria is one of the largest thermal power plant relocation projects. With these relocation projects and our experienced engineering and maintenance staff, we are differentiating ourselves in the sector.”
Uzbekistan Natural Gas Power Plant Began Production in Record Time
ODAŞ launched its first international investment, Uzbekistan Natural Gas Power Plant, in March 2022. Commenting on the power plant investment in Uzbekistan, Can said, "Our power plant in Uzbekistan, which we started building in September 2021, started its first production in a record time of six months. Today, our power plant, which continues to produce with an installed capacity of 158 MW, is expected to reach 174 MW, with the capacity increase to be completed by the end of 2023. In 2023, our power plant was commercially accepted by the National Electrics Grid of Uzbekistan (NEGU) under the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan and generated 1000 GWh of electricity. The energy produced by our plant, which is a significant contributor to Uzbekistan's energy supply, meets the annual energy needs of approximately 500,000 households. What is more, our plant has an efficiency of 49 per cent, compared with 30 per cent for existing thermal power plants in the region where we produce. In addition, the efficient generation of electricity in an environmentally responsible manner will significantly reduce the country's electricity imports.”
It is making its investments more efficient through a circular economy
Can underlined that ODAŞ plays a pioneering role of strategic importance both nationally and internationally through its investments in the energy and mining sectors. He also noted that the company will continue to be one of the innovative players in these sectors with a commitment to responsible production. ODAŞ, which is also noted for its efforts to maximize efficiency in its investments, optimally utilizes the process outputs from production at Çan2 Thermal Power Plant by converting fly ash and gypsum into products through enrichment units. Since 2020, ODAŞ has exported a total of 1 million tons of products, including 350,000 tons of fly ash and 700,000 tons of gypsum. The main export destinations for gypsum and fly ash are the United States and Canada, as well as European countries such as Italy, the Netherlands, and Germany. Can said: “We are working to make our investments more efficient through a circular economy. In this way, we are not only optimizing waste by converting it into products but also contributing to the national economy by generating foreign exchange.”
